SmallTown StudioCustom app development

One-person studio

Custom apps, built to your spec and still here in a year

Custom Android apps built to your spec, checked before they ship, and supported for as long as you need them.

Services

What a project actually involves

Four things, listed separately because they are bought separately. A client who only needs one of them should be able to see exactly which one, rather than having to take the rest as well.

Custom app development

An Android app built for the way your work actually runs, not a template with your name on it.

Every project starts from the specific thing that is costing you time or going wrong today, and is built around that rather than around a feature checklist. If an existing app already does the job, the honest answer is to use it — the value here is in the cases where it does not.

What you get

  • A signed APK you install directly, with no store account in the way
  • The full source code, yours to keep and to hand to another developer
  • A written spec describing what it does and what it deliberately does not

Design and interface

Designed for the person using it at 7am, on a cheap phone, one-handed.

Interface decisions are made against real constraints — small screens, glare, one thumb, slow networks — rather than by copying a look. Every screen is built to the accessibility standard used by the studio's own apps: measured colour contrast, visible focus, and touch targets that are actually large enough to hit.

What you get

  • A consistent design system shared between your screens, not per-screen styling
  • Color and type tokens with recorded contrast ratios
  • Dark-mode and small-screen behaviour designed in, not bolted on

Accuracy first

Checked against what you asked for, before you ever open it.

The deliverable is compared against the agreed specification line by line before it is called done. This is the part most studios skip, and it is where projects usually fail — not in the building, but in what was quietly assumed and never questioned.

What you get

  • Every requirement traced to where it is implemented
  • Edge cases tested and their behaviour documented
  • A list of what was deliberately left out, and why

Long-term support

Still here in a year. This is the part that is actually hard to find.

Most freelance work ends the moment an invoice clears, which means the only person who understands the codebase is the person who is easiest to reach at the wrong moment. This does not: fixes, small additions and rebuilds continue for as long as the app is in use, and the source is yours from day one so you are never held to it.

What you get

  • Ongoing fixes and small feature additions
  • Rebuilds against Android version changes
  • Full source handover, so nobody is ever locked in

Process

How the work runs

The order below is fixed, and so is the part most studios leave out: nothing is called finished until it has been checked against the thing you asked for.

  1. 1

    Scope

We start by writing down what the app should do, in enough detail to disagree with. What gets settled here is what it is for, who uses it, and — the part that matters most — what it will explicitly not do.

  2. 2

    Design

Screens are laid out against the spec before anything is built, so that what is being built is visible and correct while changing it is still cheap.

  3. 3

    Build

The app is implemented against the approved spec. Each feature is finished and working before the next one starts, so there is always a usable version rather than a half-built one.

  4. 4

    Check

Every requirement is traced to where it is implemented and tested against it. Anything found here gets fixed before release, and anything deliberately out of scope gets written down.

  5. 5

    Support

You get the app, the source, and the spec. Fixes and small additions continue for as long as you want the app in use.

Work

Apps, courses and sites I have built

These are built and finished, not demos. Each one solves a single problem: the apps ship as signed APKs you install yourself, Data Foundry runs in the browser, and the personal site is where the full record lives. Open any one for what it does, how it differs from what you would otherwise use, and what it cannot do yet.

TaskPulse

A calm to-do list with real-time reminders, tactile categories and an honest monthly check-in.

Available nowAndroid 6.0+v1.1.3

StudyFlow

A focus timer with a weekly timetable and an honest study record.

Available nowAndroid 7.0+v2.7.0

Data Foundry

A 16-module data-engineering course that runs in the browser.

Available nowWeb course

Personal Website

The founder's own site — product analytics, data work and the record behind the studio.

Available nowPersonal site

Client work is not listed here — it belongs to the client, not to the studio. If you would like to see what a commissioned build looks like, ask and it can be shown privately.

Founder

Rajeshwar Shingade

Data analyst, app developer, and co-founder of a farming business.

Rajeshwar Shingade

Data analyst and app developer

SmallTown Studio — one person, end to end.

Rajeshwar Shingade is the only person at SmallTown Studio. He came to software from data: as an analyst, his job is to find the error that everyone else already accepted, and that habit is the same one this studio sells as checking work before it ships. Alongside the studio he co-founded Vanya Roots, a farmer-direct supply business, which is where he learned that a business is mostly operations and its software is the smallest part.

Why this matters for your project

An analyst's job is to define the metric, check the edge cases, and say out loud what the number does not cover. That is not a process bolted onto a development studio — it is the job he already does. When he tells you a build was checked, that is literally what happened, because checking is what he is trained to do.

What he has done

  1. The studio itself. StudyFlow, KiranaTrack and TaskPulse ship as signed APKs with no account, no server and no telemetry, so they work with the internet off and uninstalling is the only way data leaves the device. Data Foundry is a free 16-module data-engineering course that runs in the browser.

  2. A spineless cactus farm supplying fresh Opuntia pads directly to farming, research, skincare and vegan-leather buyers across India. Farmer-direct: cut only after an order is placed, never cold-stored stock, with orders running from 5 kg to 1,000 kg.

  3. Editorial planning, content direction and publication quality for the university's technology magazine. Being responsible for what ships under a name is the same skill as being responsible for what ships in an app.

  4. 2024–2025. Recognised for academic performance and consistency across the first year of the degree.

What working with SmallTown Studio actually means

You talk to the person building it

There is no account manager and no handover. Requirements go straight to the developer, and nothing is lost in translation because there is no translation step.

The source is yours

Full source code is handed over on delivery, so any other developer can pick the project up and continue it. You are never dependent on this one studio to keep your app alive.

No lock-in, no subscription

The app is a file you install, not a licence you renew. Nothing stops working because a payment did, and there is no per-month cost to keep using what you already have.

Scope is written down

What the app does and does not do is agreed in advance and recorded. Disagreements about scope are rare when everybody read the same page.

Describe what you are trying to do and I will tell you honestly whether a custom app is the right answer — including when the answer is that an existing one is enough. The more specific the problem, the more useful the reply.

Not sure whether it is worth building yet? Send the problem anyway. The most useful first message is a description of what goes wrong, not a specification — the specification is what we work out together.
